In addition to the article, there is also a short video that is shown on the screen prior to the presentation. The video explains how Jeff Bezos founded Amazon and his vision for the company. The following is an excerpt from this video:
Jeff Bezos was born in 1964 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His father was a lawyer, and his family moved around a lot as he grew up due to his father’s job. By the time he was in high school, he had lived in three states (California, Texas, and New Mexico) as well as Washington D.C., where his father had been assigned as part of an intelligence agency’s counterintelligence team. His family eventually settled down in Houston when Jeff was 16 years old and Jeff attended Rice University on a full scholarship starting at age 18. He majored in computer science because at that time it seemed like the most interesting thing he could do with his life (Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos).
At Rice, he began to work on a computer program that would calculate the angles in a triangle. He worked on the project for four years, but never finished it. He found that he was more interested in software development because it was something he could do with his hands and make money doing. Jeff started his first company at age 21; it was called Cadabra and it sold data processing software to companies like Shell Oil Company. At this point, he had two employees: himself and his roommate (Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos).
The company eventually failed because it couldn’t sell enough software to stay in business. In 1984, however, he started another company called Lexis-Nexis which provided a search engine for legal documents. The company didn’t last long either; one of the problems was that there were too many legal documents to be searched (Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos).
